GITONGA APRIL 2016 1.1 Overview The word theory merely refers to a particular kind of explanation. Leedy and Ormrod (2005) point out: ââ¬Å"A theory is an organized body of concepts and principles intended to explain a particular phenomenonâ⬠. Thus, theories explain ââ¬Å"Howâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Whyâ⬠something operates as it does (Johnson Christensen, 2007). As stated by Boss, Doherty, LaRossa, Schumm, Steinmetz (1993), ââ¬Å"Theorizing is the process of systematically formulating and organizing ideas to understand a particular phenomenon. Thus, a theory is the set of interconnected ideas that emerge from this process.â⬠The major sociological perspectives on education fall nicely into the functional, conflict, and symbolic interactionist approaches (Ballantine Hammack, 2012) 1.2 Conflict theory Conflict theory does not dispute the functions just described. However, it does give some of them a different slant by emphasizing how education also perpetuates social inequality (Ballantine Hammack, 2012).
